Maintaining a Positive Attitude During the COVID-19 Pandemic
It is easy to think yourself into an anxious mood. This pandemic has us all asking ourselves, when will things be normal again? Unfortunately, our “normal” lifestyle may not return for a while. To cope with this pandemic, we have to accept what is and develop effective coping strategies to address daily challenges. The following are four general categories of coping mechanisms to maintain a healthy mind:
1. Keep A Routine
It is important to keep a routine to prevent spiralling. We suggest following a similar routine during the workweek and a more relaxed schedule for the weekend. Firstly, change out of your pyjamas as soon as you wake up to feel less sluggish. Secondly, try to eat meals at around the same time each day to maintain a regular diet. Thirdly, practise self-care before bed – take a bath, light a candle, read a book, meditate, etc. Most people experience burnout or extreme tiredness on weekdays from work. Take this time to exercise, rest your body, and get a full eight (8) hours of sleep per night when possible.
2. Try Something New
During this pandemic, individuals may have some extra time in their schedule. Instead of choosing an activity in which you would normally take part, try an activity that you have always wanted to do but never found the time to do so. For example: reorganizing your house or room, painting the walls a different colour, rearranging the furniture, cooking something new, learning a new language, etc.
3. Stay in contact with Friends & Family
It is important to stay in contact with friends and family, especially during this time. This pandemic is a difficult situation for all of us, so by staying connected with friends and family, you can develop a support system which will help promote positivity and your mental health.
4. Practice Self-care
Self-care means prioritizing yourself and your needs. What does this mean? Making sure you take care of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. Avoid thinking that this may be construed as a selfish thing to do; in fact, the opposite is true. Self-care can be your gift to others because it allows you to be truly present to help them in times of need.
With that being said, keep in mind that better days are ahead, and until then, stay home and stay safe.
